Storms blew through Pike County and surrounding counties in Middle Georgia last night. Public safety was the top priority for Pike County citizens and the damage from those storms--as well as the work that had been done throughout the night--was very evident in the morning light. Read article on the Home page dated 4.5.11 for more information on the damage. Pine trees had tops that looked like they were sheared off and left on the ground in some places. In others, trees caused damaged when they fell on power lines, cars, and homes. |

There was a Town Hall Meeting about the upcoming Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) vote in the Courtroom of the Pike County Courthouse on January 31, 2011. This is a one cent sales tax that would be paid on items bought in Pike County that is expected to bring in approximately $5,400,000 over five years. One half is designated for the Courthouse and one half is designated for work on roads, streets, and bridges in Pike County. The repair of the Courthouse is priority with that work beginning first and the rest going to repair and maintenance of roads, streets, and bridges. Chairman Walker shows the hole in the ceiling in this photo. |
The paint peeling off of the ceiling, the 1940's wiring hanging down from the ceiling for lighting, and the hole bigger than my hand in the ceiling where you can see into the attic were blatantly obvious from the courtroom. (I thought it went all of the way through the roof until going up there today 2.1.11 in the rain.) The wiring in the basement that was described as a bowl full of spaghetti just thrown around, the lack of security for court, and other issues were not so obvious until we took the tour after the hour and twenty minute long question and answer session. Citizens can choose to pay for these costs with a SPLOST that everyone pays for or we can choose to pay for upgrades to this facility and roads, streets, and bridges with our property taxes at a later time. |

The freezing temperatures made it look like steam was coming off of Lt. Keith Jackson's head after removing his helmet. | |
| There was a fire in Molena on Sunday, January 23, 2011. According to Interim Fire Chief Randy Snyder, interior teams stopped what could have been a horrible fire. "The flames were quickly extinguished, and damage (fire, smoke, water) was limited to a converted attic and a small portion of the living room," he said. "We had timely notification, rapid response, and great teamwork." One civilian was treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries. See article on the Home Page dated 1.24.11.
