Approximately 44 children and 32 adults attended the July 13, 2011 Summer Reading Program at the J. Joel Edwards Library. This program was presented by Pike County Emergency Services (PCES). Mike Mahan has been named chair of the Division of Education at Gordon College. Mahan comes to Gordon from Armstrong Atlantic State University where he was most recently Assistant Professor, Middle and Secondary Education. Mahan earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s in Student Personnel Administration and his Ed.D in Science Education all from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. “I look forward to being a part of the team that helps Gordon’s education program grow and reach its full potential,” Mahan said. On June 28 and 29, 2011, twelve 4-H’ers had a lot of fun learning how to construct and decorate gingerbread houses. Rosemary Logan from the Council on Aging for McIntosh Trail Inc. shared her time and knowledge of building Gingerbread Houses with the 4-H’ers in the two day class. | On June 3, 2011 twenty-six Pike and Lamar County 4-H’ers enjoyed a day of fishing at “Diastole Farm” in Concord. Mr. Ellis Jones had DNR stock his catfish pond in December for this fishing event. Conservation Ranger Wanda Roberts fed the fish daily to get the fish to a good eating size. This made for a wonderful catching day for most. Ms. Wanda Roberts' father, Claud Thompson, was on hand to teach the 4-H’ers how to skin and clean their catfish to take home. Pike County Emergency Services sponsors the annual 4th of July parade in Zebulon every year. There was a threat of rain this year, but people came out anyway and the rain held off for the parade. Pike County Emergency Services depicted the scene from 9-11 where fire fighters pulled a flag from the rubble and let it wave proudly in the midst of that tragedy. There were many on the sidelines who waved flags throughout the parade too. Thanks to all who participated in our 4th of July parade! Mark Muir of Georgia Irish Disc Dogs made a video of the parade. 4-H Sizzlin’ with Beef Summer Program: On Wednesday June 8th fourteen 4-H’ers met at the 4-H office to learn about beef, food safety and to prepare and enjoy eating recipes made with beef. | Georgia Relay, the free public service that enables people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf-blind and speech-impaired to place and receive calls via a standard telephone line, and Hamilton Relay, the telecommunications relay service provider for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing and speech disabled, recently announced the winner of the Hamilton Relay 2011 Better Hearing and Speech Month Recognition award. This year’s winner is Georgian Ron Vickery, who is dedicated to providing insight, education and resources to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing within the state. The Vacation Reading Program will run from May 31st through July 22, 2011 and any child through the age of 16 may join. Programs will be held each Wednesday except July 6th at 3 p.m. | |

| Pike County Emergency Services held its annual picnic on May 22, 2011. About 50 people from PCES and Mid Georgia Ambulance showed up with their families to enjoy the afternoon at Don Collins' farm. There were burgers, hot dogs, covered dishes, and desserts. After lunch they got to fish, play volleyball or listen to some of the guys and gals sing - several brought guitars. The traveling replica of Washington’s Vietnam Veterans' Memorial is coming to the Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park this Memorial Day weekend, beginning at 9:30AM, Friday, May 27th through 4:00PM, Monday, May 30th. Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park is located at 301 Cowan Road, between Vineyard and McIntosh Roads in northwest Griffin. This is the ONLY stop in Georgia this season. The Dignity Memorial® Vietnam Wall is a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The faux-granite replica stands 240 feet long and eight feet high. The names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam are inscribed on the replica. | Pike County held its annual Relay for Life on May 20, 2011. The theme was “Driving Away Cancer”. From the Survivor's Lap where those standing on the sidelines cheered for survivors of cancer to the remembrance of those fighting cancer and who had lost the fight to this horrible disease and all of the events in between, this was a night to remember. Warden Edd Sanders told Commissioners at the commission meeting earlier this month that he would help make sure that the Courthouse looked good for the first events of the summer season with Friday on the Square and the Pimiento Festival both being held on the 3rd weekend in May. The Rock Ranch hosted R.U.S.H. Weekend (reaching un-churched students for him) this past weekend. Students enjoyed music by Kristian Stanfill and LeCrae, great messages from speakers Tony Nolan, David Nasser and R.U.S.H. founder Marc Pritchett. Fun games included paintball, dodge ball, flag football, a rock climbing wall, volleyball, a bungee trampoline, the giant jumping pillow and the new zip lines at The Rock Ranch. This event featured concerts, games and break-out sessions over 2 days and an amazing fireworks finale’. Over 2400 youth attended and 382 made decisions for Christ! PCMS Track and Field experienced a victorious year with an undefeated girl’s team garnering the 2011 CGMSL Championship in Track and Field. The boy’s team was a winner as well, finishing in 3rd place in the championship event held at Crawford County Middle School. Coach Tidwell and Coach Alley were “fired up” about the success of the season. Coach Tidwell commented that “several of our athletes in the field events, as well as our runners, continued to improve on their personal best distances and times. | The National Day of Prayer was celebrated by over 120 people on May 5, 2011 on the Courthouse Square in Zebulon, Georgia. The Men from Mt. Olive played and sang at the afternoon service and Out of Zebulun and the Mt. Gilead Church Choir sang during the evening prayer service. Chaplain Ben Maxedon of Prayer Power of Georgia, Inc. organized our 12th local National Day of Prayer event. Pastors from several churches in our community came together to prayer for our community, state and nation as well as our local, state, and national leaders and our military and a representative from both Senator Saxby Chambliss and Rep. Westmoreland's offices were present to read a statement to those attending. Sarah Casey and Chris Camantique received the 1st annual award of the Prayer Power Faith Award for graduating seniors in Pike County during the evening service. | March 13-31 Margie Mangham and Glenna Waller traveled to Dumaguete City, Philippines to serve in the ministry of Little Children of the World/Little Children of the Philippines (LCW/LCP). Little Children of the World provides help and hope to the poorest of the poor. Education is a tremendous milestone in their lives. While there Margie and Glenna had the privilege to celebrate major educational achievements including graduations of 129 boys and girls from seven LCP Preschools, 19 children and youth from LCP School on Wheels (a program for out of school children), forty-two from High School and 27 from College. Cancer Survivors to Walk Lap of Hope to Kick-Off Relay for Life On Friday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m., the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Pike County will kick off with a special Survivor’s Lap at the PCHS track. Cancer Survivor Mark Andrews, Athletic Director and Boy’s Basketball coach at Pike County High School, is excited about participating in this year’s event. As he was undergoing treatment for tonsular cancer last year, he was unable to walk in Relay. His fellow coaches, teachers, athletes and students, however, walked in his honor. “I was so humbled by the outpouring of love and expressions of support I received from this event,” stated Coach Andrews. “I am looking forward to walking this year, not only as a Survivor, but as a supporter of such an important cause. April 2-3, 2011 Pike County 4-H'ers Ansley Carter, Danielle Cawthon and Wendy Sawyer CEPA traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center for Ambassador Training weekend. Ansley and Danielle choose Health Rocks as their issue area. Health Rocks is a healthy life program based on decision making and appropriate health knowledge with its beginning-level curriculum targeted at youth ages 8 to 12, intermediate level targeted at youth ages 12-14. The program also includes components that bring youth and adults together as partners in developing community strategies that prepare young people to make healthy living choices. Developing life skills, such as communicating with others, dealing with stress, and critical thinking, help youth develop internal strength to resist risky behaviors. | Ms. Susan Chaney, Property & Warehouse Supervisor, has been with the Georgia Department of Corrections and West Central for over 10 years. The Concord resident was selected by her coworkers recently as " The Employee of the Quarter" at WCPRC. Ms. Chaney is shown with warden Edd Sanders and Business Manager judy Clay. Warden Sanders stated that the day he hired Ms. Chaney was " one of my best day's work ". |

The Pike County Lady Pirates (ranked #6 in the Class AA) continued their march towards their final prize with a 4-0 victory over the Toombs County Lady Dogs on Thursday, April 28th and a 9-0 victory against the SE Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets in the 2nd Round. Our #6 Class AA Lady Pirates are hosting an Elite 8 game on Friday, May 6th at 5:30 p.m. against #2 Class AA Greater Atlanta Christian at the Pike County High School football field. Admission is $7. The PCMS track team sprinted to a spectacular season ending performance. The girls team won with 88 points and they boys scored 85. Both teams won by a landslide with a margin of victory of 30+ points. They competed in the League Championship on Saturday, April 30th. Look for that write up from Guest Columnist Renee Andrews soon. | Day 3: Barnesville Nazarene Church is the Salvation Army drop off site located at 744 Veterans Parkway just past Ingles at the corner of Hwy 341 and Thomaston Road and the West Central Pre-Release Center located at 1070 County Farm Road in Zebulon is a local drop off point. It is located beside the Pike County Recreational Facility. They are delivering items to Barnesville as they come in. Delivery hours at the Pre-Release Center are any time during daylight hours. Deliveries are being accepted at Barnesville Nazarene Church from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. every day this week. Those needing assistance can come by the church from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and can call a number for assistance after hours. | |

Georgia State Defense Force Members volunteered their time to help those in need on Grove Street in Barnesville. Their skills cutting up trees, helping move items from homes into pods for homeowners, and other ways that they helped was very much appreciated. So many people from all walks of life showed up to help too. It was amazing! |

Whether they were from a Boy Scout Troop or just people who wanted to help someone else out in their time of need, their love for others showed in their hard work and kind words.
