James Stewart Chapter Members Honor Veterans

ZEBULON and FRANKLIN - Veterans Day (November 11th) is a special day for the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) because we get to honor our veterans on a day just for them. When November 11 falls in the middle of the week, DAR chapters hold special events the weekend before the 11th, on the 11th, and the weekend after the 11th. This year the James Stewart Chapter members honored veterans in many different ways.

On November 11, James Stewart Chapter member Shannon McCrary and her kindergarten students presented 53 framed Certificates of Appreciation for Service from the James Stewart Chapter to 23 Vietnam veterans, 4 veterans of World War II, and 26 veterans of other wars and conflicts as part of the Pike Primary “Parade of Honor” held each Veterans Day. Mrs. McCrary had some of her students helping present the certificates to their special veterans. The James Stewart Chapter was pleased to be asked to be a part of this wonderful ceremony.

On Saturday, November 14th, the James Stewart Chapter held a ceremony at the Veterans Park in Franklin. The program consisted of a Welcome by Regent Carla Brown, a prayer for our Veterans by Chaplain Sharon Frost, the Pledge of Allegiance led by member Jane Barker and a moving rendition of our National Anthem as played by the US Coast Guard Band. Marifaythe Whitley gave a history of Veterans Day. Kayla Runyan planted flags, one for each branch of service, as Mindy Runyan told about each. Paige Harrod read “Those Who Dare Fight” by Roger Robicheau. Regent Brown thanked all veterans for their service and attendees shared their service memories or stories of their loved veterans. A drawing was held for an American Flag and veteran Ray Brown held the winning ticket. Mary Lane presented him his flag and Regent Brown ended the ceremony with a request for prayers for our veterans and active servicemen, prayers for those in Paris, and prayers for our nation and its leaders.
