American Legion Pike Post 197 Hosts Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

The flags flew at half-staff as American Legion Pike Post 197 hosted the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on the Square in Zebulon on Veterans Day 2011. This cool and windy day was perfect November weather to celebrate those who have sacrificed to serve our country.

Laura Kilby sang a wonderful rendition of our National Anthem.

Three time combat veteran Colonel Wade Smith was the guest speaker. He highlighted the accomplishments of local veterans and told the audience that Georgia has provided more military personnel traditionally than any other state in the nation.

"As long as you veterans continue to stand up and take leadership positions and lead our city, lead our county, lead our state, and lead our nation, democracy will be ok," said Col. Smith. He said that our country was built on the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God and that tradition has been carried on under the same tradition as our Founding Fathers through the men and women in our military today. "America still stands as the nation of the world that everyone wants to join if they possibly can... Never take second place as far as America is concerned."

"We have assembled to honor those that have served and continue to serve." He thanked everyone for serving in the military and encouraged those present to pat those on the back who are serving now because they are doing a tremendous job.

The number of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action were named during this ceremony. Commander Bill Payton, Sr. said that there was a POW/MIA chair to remember those who haven't been accounted for. "Let's endeavor to bring them home." Military families were also honored and thanked for their sacrifice.
