ZEBULON – Mark and Mary Nalls have opened up their garden to bless people in the community with collards and turnip greens for their Thanksgiving dinners for years. Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week are the annual giveaway days each year.
Mark enjoys working in the garden and believes this is a gift that he should be sharing with the community. This will be the seventh year in a row that they have been able to bless others with their crops.
This year, there are 42 rows of turnips and 17 rows of collards. How long is a row? These are 60 feet long!
Mark and Mary enjoy giving away the bundles of turnips and collards to members of the community because they get to have a time of fellowship with them and often get to meet new people.
“Giving away the harvest really does make your heart smile,” Mark said. He said that he gets a lot of hugs too.
Giving away their harvest brings a smile to their faces and to the people who are coming to share in the harvest. First Baptist Church Sunday School helped out last year and might be helping again this year.
These free greens will be cut and placed into bags for members of the community to pick up and take home for Thanksgiving.
There will be donation boxes for two organizations if anyone wants to pass along a blessing to someone else as they pick up greens for their Thanksgiving meal.
The Pike County Backpack Program provides weekend meals for children in need in Pike County, and Families 4 Families is a faith-based foster care agency that is active in our area and around the state.
The community garden is located at 127 Gwyn Street in Meansville. It will open at daylight and remain open until dark on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 25 on a first come, first serve basis.
