A Universe of Stories! - Summer Reading Begins at J. Joel Edwards Public Library

ZEBULON - The J. Joel Edwards Public Library is ready to blast off on another fun-filled summer reading program, following the national theme A Universe of Stories. Throughout June and July, the library will be hosting various programs to accommodate all ages, from toddlers to adults.

Mondays are dedicated to the teen scene, encouraging teens to join in a series of programs at the library this summer. Each hour that a teen adds to their reading log or attends a program at the library, he or she will accumulate points to win prizes and be entered into a grand prize drawing. Eight teen in-house programs will be offered over the summer. Teens may enjoy creating their own galaxy bottles in June and solar eclipsed bleached t-shirts in July. Teens are invited to an end of the summer finale, during which the grand prize will be given away to one lucky participant.

Toddlers (12 months to 36 months) are invited to join Miss Kim each Thursday at 11:00 for stories, songs, and crafts. Preschool children, ages three through five, are invited for their own stories, songs, and crafts on Tuesdays at 11:00.

Each Thursday at 1:00 children ages 6-12 are encouraged to suit up and fly their space shuttles to the library for magic shows, art lessons, dance, theater, and much more.

The adults are not to be left out this year, either. Each time an adult checks out a book, he or she is given the chance to answer a challenging question related to this year’s theme: A Universe of Stories. At the end of the week, a winner is chosen from the correct answers and awarded a shopping bag full of prizes from local businesses.

Family programs, appropriate for all ages, are held most Thursdays at 6:00 in June and July. Mark Merchant, comedian and ventriloquist, kicks off the summer with Two Voices in One, designed to keep all ages rolling with laughter. Michael “Buffalo” Smith, the Ambassador of Southern Rock, will be the star of his own presentation and book signing that’s sure to take you back to the 70’s and 80’s.

Other events guaranteed to keep the library shining bright include a family karaoke night, a galaxy of honeybees with local beekeeper Jim Quick, and an out-of-this world performance by inspirational ventriloquist Marc Griffiths.

All programs and events are free and open to the public. For more information and a full calendar of all events, follow the J. Joel Edwards Public Library on Facebook, call the library at (770) 567-2014, or visit the library during regular business hours: M/W/F 10-5, T/Th 10-7, and Saturday 10-3.
