Summer Reading Is For Everyone at the J. Joel Edwards Library

ZEBULON - With summer right around the corner, the J. Joel Edwards Public Library announces its exciting summer program, intended to appeal to all ages. The theme for children through age 12 is Every Hero Has a Story, for teens Unmask, and for adults Escape the Ordinary.

Preschool story time for ages 5 and under will be held every Tuesday at 11:00. Children’s coordinator Kim Mason says she will present stories, activities, and crafts focusing on “the heroes that are all around us – in our families, our communities, our schools, and even within ourselves.”

Programs for ages 6-12 will be held every Thursday at 1:00, with an emphasis on local heroes who just might surprise us. Library manager Rosemary Bunn reveals, “Included in the Thursday programs are Ranger the Canine Officer, a world record-holder in extreme sports, and our local fire fighters (who just might cool things off for us in July).”

The teen programs are held on Mondays at 1:00 and will also include local heroes, contests, and activities under the expert guidance of library assistant Emily Evans. At the first meeting, June 1, teens will create their own bleached tee shirts.

The adults deserve some rewards this summer, too, so the library has planned Thursday evening special events each month. “Dr. John Riley will be back with his harp guitars in June,” says Bunn, “and we will be regaled by the Hall of Fame’s Due South Band in July.” Since the weekly contest proved so popular last summer, the adults this year will be able to enter the Hero of the Week contest, competing for a hero’s helping of prizes each week.

Registration for children and teens begins Saturday, May 30, at the library. All programs and activities are free and open to the public. For more information visit the library during regular business hours: MWF 10-5, TTh 10-7, and Sat. 10-3.
