ZEBULON - A 1960’s model Varga Kachina landed at the Pike County Landfill a little before 4 p.m. today. Witnesses called 911 and reported that it sounded like a plane had experienced engine problems and had gone down behind the Recycling Center.
20 year old Patrick McGinn Jr. was flying solo in the plane that he and his Dad, Patrick McGinn Sr., own. He was flying over Pike County from his home in Eagles Landing when the problem occurred.
Patrick did some fast thinking when the engine backfired and completely shut off. He said that he looked for the closest place to land and landed the plane safely in the landfill. The only incident that occurred during the landing was when one of the wings clipped a pole that stood in the field where he landed. The pilot was not injured in the incident
The FAA is investigating this incident.
