Pinwheels for Prevention – We All Have A Role to Play
By Guest Columnist Michael Powell

ZEBULON - April is national Child Abuse Awareness Prevention Month. The Pike Community Resource Network, our local Georgia Family Connection collaborative, has placed a Pinwheels for Prevention display on the courthouse lawn in Zebulon, Georgia. The display is part of the national Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign, which has seen more than 3 million pinwheels distributed nationwide since April 2008.

It is time to celebrate the good things our communities do to promote healthy child development, as well as to reflect on the work that still needs to be done to reduce the number of children experiencing abuse and neglect in their lives.

Child Abuse Awareness Prevention Month is a time when we ask people to think about children and what they, and their families, need to thrive. “Pinwheel gardens or displays planted in communities across the nation serve as powerful visual reminders that we all play a role as stewards of children’s lives, and as a reminder of childlike notions, and the healthy, happy full lives all children deserve.” said Michael Powell, Executive Director of The Pike Community Resource Network, your local Georgia Family Connection collaborative. “When communities come together to support our children and families, we all benefit: our fellow citizens are better educated, employees are more effective and miss less work, and we will see a profound impact on the quality of life in the communities in which families live.”

The Pike Community Resource Network strives to transform awareness into action. We provide prevention based educational awareness projects and activities to strengthen families and empower community members to protect future generations. We accomplish this through partnerships with local and state organizations such as the Pike County School District, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Pike County Kiwanis, Prevent Child Abuse – Georgia and the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, and Prayer Power of Georgia, Inc.

The April Pike Community Resource Network collaborative meeting will be a special showing of Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children training as part of our April prevention emphasis activities. The meeting will be Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 9 AM – 11 AM.

The Pike Community Resource Network meets on the first Thursday of each month, 9 AM to 10:15 AM, at the Church of Joy, 3080 Highway 362 W, Williamson, GA 30292. We invite you to join us.
