CONCORD - On September 25th, our Hope 4 Tomorrow Optimist Club of Pike County held our End of the Year Banquet Celebration at the Friendship Presbyterian Church in Concord. Our club celebrated a great year that was filled with sharing Optimism and Hope to our club and community. We also honored two of our members that went beyond the call of duty by awarding them with the Optimist Award and Community Award.
Michael Powell was awarded our Community Award (4th picture with Rufus Clemmons, his wife Vanessa, and Mike's wife Debbie) for his outstanding work not only to our club but our community through his work as the Director our local Family Connection. Mr. Powell was able to maintain his presence in our community by continue to share his knowledge and resources to connect our community and organizations that need services despite him going through a series of personal obstacles himself. “Michael Powell is a God fearing and caring person who truly looks out for the welfare of others,” said President Rufus Clemmons.
Emmanuel Lucas was awarded our Optimist Award (1st picture with Rufus Clemmons and his wife, and Emmanuel's mother Patricia Lucas) for his commitment and dedication to the Optimist Club and willingness to go beyond that is ask of him to better himself, our club, and our community. “Emmanuel is a well-mannered and humble young man who is always looking to better himself and those around him. I am super proud of him and know the sky is the limit to what he is going to bring to our club and community,” said President Rufus Clemmons.
On October 13th, our Optimist Club partner with Mattie’s Kitchen to celebrate Optimist International’s Celebrate Community initiative in serving communities with projects that are impactful to their respectful community. Our two organization chose to serve some of our local first responders and heroes that include the Sheriff's Department, Zebulon Police Department, and Health Department. Our two organizations were also able to serve some of the residents of Concord giving our overall total of over 100 participants served. “It was my first event collaborating with the Optimist Club and it was great partnership and looking forward doing more with them,” said Mattie’s Kitchen Director/Founder and Optimist Member Christy Finley Welch.
On October 19th, our Hope 4 Tomorrow Optimist Members were installed for the 2021-2022 Optimist Calendar year by the GATEway District’s Governor Gerald Johnson. The members include Officers President/Founder Rufus Clemmons, President Elect Emmanuel Lucas, Secretary and Treasurer Vanessa Clemmons, Club Foundation Representative Angelia Jones, Hope 4 Tomorrow Representative Patricia Dabbs and members Charles Burden, Susan Chaney, Ortearia Hamm, John Hanson, Floyd Miller, Vanetta Moss, Mike Powell, Laura Chambley-Shadrick, Harland Smith, Giancarlo Walker, Christy Finley-Welch, and Carson Wynn. Also, on October 16th at the GATEway District Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, President Rufus Clemmons was installed to serve as President again for this year term. Rufus also serves for the third straight year as the District’s Inspirational Speaker/Chaplin.
