National Poetry Month Celebration in Zebulon, Georgia

ZEBULON - Pike County will celebrate National Poetry Month with the theme of Awakenings throughout April with several events that foster a love of reading and writing poetry. This celebration is made possible through Pike County Schools’ L4GA Grant, which provides funding to bring Literacy events to our community as we work in partnership with our L4GA community partners and the Pike County Arts Council.

We are offering a variety of exciting events at 1828 Coffee Company on the Zebulon square:

• Ethan Jacobs kicked off our pre-celebration in February with readings from his poetry collection entitled Dust and will speak at J. Joel Edwards Library on April 16 at 5:30 for those who call the library to register for this event.

• Clayton Moon will read from his book Awakenings on March 28 at 7 p.m.

• The Poetry Fox of Durham, NC will write unique on-the-spot poems using a word offered to him starting at 3:15 on April 11 and will speak about his writing at 7 p.m.

• Finally, our Georgia Poet Laureate, Chelsea Rathburn, will read from her books and share her writing inspirations at 7 p.m. following a community Open Mic at 6 p.m. on April 25.

• Local author and educator Todd Child will also share his new book at A Novel Experience on April 13 from 5-7 p.m.

Other events include virtual poetry writing stations at Williamson LEAF, J. Joel Edwards Public Library, A Novel Experience, and 1828 Coffee Company. These writing stations will feature short videos that can be scanned for instructions, along with a community platform where writers can share their poetry from each Pop-Up Poetry station.

Windows in the Chamber of Commerce will feature poetry canvases on the theme of Awakenings beginning April 15 and running through May. For more information, please contact Dr. Kim Johnson, District Literacy Specialist with Pike County Schools, at 770-567-8489.

Please come join us as we celebrate National Poetry Month in Pike County!
