Pike County Holds 16th Celebration of The National Day of Prayer

ZEBULON - Prayer Power of Georgia sponsored the Pike County celebration of the annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 5, 2016. About 110 people from our community for the service at noon on the Pike County Courthouse Square on a chilly, windy day.

This was the 65th Annual National Day of Prayer celebration for our nation and Pike County's 16 Annual National Day of Prayer. The verse for this year is from Isaiah 58:1a. It says, "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet."

Sheriff Jimmy Thomas led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Bill Payton, Sr. opened by reading a passage from a discussion that occurred during the Constitutional Convention on June 28, 1787 asking for prayer before the opening of each day. It could have been written today: "I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that "except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall be become a reproach and a bye word down to future age. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing Governments by Human Wisdom, and leave it to chance, war, and conquest. I therefore beg leave to move -- that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that service."

Ms. Laura Gower read a statement from Senator Johnny Isakson praised the National Day of Prayer as a time to united and focus our prayers on our families, our churches, the leaders in our communities as well as those serving in our military around the world to keep us free.

Rev. Frank Winfrey from New Hope Baptist Church implored those in attendance to seek God's wisdom, strength, patience, and compassion. The Treasure Field Band provided the music including a song by Frank James Fortner entitled, "In This Time (Habakkuk's National Prayer)." The chorus said, "Once again, once again, once again hear our cry and move Your mighty hand. In this time and in this land, Glorify Your Name again. redeem this nation and renew the heart of man in this generation, in this time and in this land."

Chaplain Ben Maxedon gave the opening and closing words and prayers. He thanked the vets in attendance for their service and said a thank you to those who are serving today. Chaplain Maxedon said that without prayer, we have no way to communicate with our Father and challenged those present to pray for our nation every day and stated that James 5:16 tells us that the fervent and persistent prayer of a righteous heart of the right reasons can bring about change. He prayed for revival and restoration for our nation.
