Gordon State College Holds Dedication for Military Memorial

BARNESVILLE - On Saturday, April 15, 2015, over 200 family, friends, and alumni came to Gordon State College in Barnesville to attend the dedication of the Military Memorial on campus. This memorial is the result of ten years of dedication in an effort to honor Gordon's military history and those who attended Gordon and later gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country.

There were many smiles and memories shared as the crowd gathered for the Memorial Dedication. Robert Melvin traveled from North Carolina back to the college that he attended in Barnesville with a picture and a lanyard around his neck that read, "I am one of the 350." He also had a picture of his best friend, Jan Greene, who donated $500 toward making this memorial become a reality. Robert called Gordon State and asked whether he could complete Jan's $1,000 donation with the remaining $500 to honor him because Jan died five years ago and could not finish the donation himself. The college agreed, and Robert brought a picture of Jan to the dedication in his honor. "It was nice that they let me finish it."

The Memorial contains an entrance that is flanked by cannons that have been on campus many years, a Wall of Honor that lists the names of alumni and faculty who lost their lives while serving our country, and a replica of Lambdin Hall that serves as the other entrance. A flag that was flown over the US Capitol to honor those who have served and continue to serve our nation was presented to Gordon State by Congressman Lynn Westmoreland's Office and stands in a place of honor before the Wall of Honor.

This Memorial was introduced by various speakers as way to remember the lives of those who gave their lives as they served our country and will be a quiet place to reflect as well as a historic marker to look back and know the history of Gordon State College through its faculty and alumni who served.

The names of all 62 faculty and alumni who have served and died in the service of their country were read aloud. Family members were honored who came to the dedication in honor of their loved ones. One speaker pointed out that each name of this wall was a person with hopes and aspirations, and they gave up their hopes and aspirations for us. Another said, "May this be a reminder of sacrifices that have been made and are being made to make this world a better place.

The ceremony was closed out with a prayer and the playing of Taps in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country.
