Wanted: Relatives of Military Heroes Listed on Pike County Veteran’s Memorial
By Guest Columnist Bryan Richardson

ZEBULON - For the past two years, The Pike County American Legion Post 197 has hosted the Pike County Memorial Hall Induction Ceremonies. The qualification to be inducted is a Pike County Citizen who has given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This includes Sheriff’s Department, first responders, and military.

The first Inductee was Corporal Jeffrey D. Walker on 28 September 2013, and the second inductee was First Lieutenant Robert E. Oxford on 6 December 2014. The Memorial Hall is located in the Pike County Memorial Annex Building at the old Pike County Middle School.

Post 197 would like to continue honoring those from Pike County who given the ultimate sacrifice with the future goal of honoring every name that is on the Pike County Veteran’s Memorial and every Sheriff’s Department/first responder of Pike County who died in the line of duty. To make this happen, Post 197 needs the critical help of family and relatives. Included is a list of names and their respective wars.

If you are related to any of these heroes or know of a family member or relative, please contact Bryan Richardson, Post 197 Historian at telephone 770-884-9810 or email address: rich5060@bellsouth.net for candidate requirements and selection status.

Based on family/relative response, Post 197 will establish a candidate list that staggers the inductees throughout the upcoming years. The goal is to induct 1 to 4 a year representing as many of the Wars as possible. Post 197 will host an inductee ceremony during the month of September at the Old Middle School Annex. Inductees will be honored and a permanent Shadow Box will be unveiled to accompany the first two inductees.
