Buddy Mays Is Recipient of USTA Southern 2016 Annual Tennis Award

PEACHTREE CORNERS - In November, United States Tennis Association (USTA) Southern announced the recipients of its 2016 awards, given for outstanding achievements in tennis both on and off the court. Twenty-seven winners will be recognized during the USTA Southern Annual Meeting at the Atlanta Perimeter Marriott Hotel, scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2017.

Selected winners were nominated as candidates by USTA staff and volunteers in the section’s nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana,Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The winners were then selected from among the nominees by volunteer members of the Awards Committee and numerous other USTA Southern committees.

Meansville's Buddy Mays was chosen for the Wheelchair Tennis Excellence Award. The Committee noted that Buddy is "one of the most outstanding wheelchair player/volunteers in Georgia. He is a voluntary coach, focusing on teaching children the sport."

Rome has hosted two "Train the Trainer" sessions. Buddy Mays attended both. "He is always willing to help wherever needed and is a great ambassador for the sport. He is not selfish with his time and truly has the best interest of promoting adaptive sport - specifically wheelchair tennis."

Buddy is a combat veteran who was injured while serving in a 2005 incident in Iraq. He has the support of his wife, Summer, and daughters Olivia and Helena as he participates in sports and helps others in a variety of ways. From coaching at tennis to being a project manager for Sunshine on a Ranney Day when a bedroom was built for Briana Hudson, Buddy is an inspiration because his can-do attitude is certain to rub off on those around him!

Buddy said that he doesn't play tennis for himself--though he does love it. "I play in the hopes of someone seeing me play that knows someone in a wheelchair and will be able to go inspire them by my story to get active and try a wheelchair sport," he said."Wheelchair sports literally saved my life and if it only helps one other disabled person and changes their life my goal was met."

He was also player of the month: www.georgia.usta.com/adult/player_of_the_month__buddy_mays/.
