First Annual Bible Reading Marathon to be Held in Zebulon

ZEBULON - The first annual Bible Reading Marathon will be held at the south portico of the Pike County courthouse beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday, September 7. It takes 90 hours to read through the Bible, so the event will close for the day at 10 p.m. and start up at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8. For the next five days, the word of God will be proclaimed during the hours of 7 a.m. through 10 p.m. The final day of the marathon will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 13, and close out with the book of Revelation before 10 p.m.

Over 300 local residents are needed to fill at least a 15 minute time slot, but may read as long as one wishes as long as he or she has preregistered. Walk-ups to read are welcome and will be accommodated if unfilled time slots are available.

The history of Bible Reading marathons is exciting. Dr. John Hash of Bible Pathway Ministries felt led of God to host the first marathon (anywhere) on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem on January 1, 1990. That same year, marathons began to spread all over the world. In the spring of 1993, the week prior to the National Day of Prayer, the first marathon was held on the steps of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. It has been an annual event since.

The first marathon in Georgia was held in Cochran in 2004. Since then only one other county has joined the ranks - Upson. This year, Pike and Dodge County will double that number! Come out and celebrate God's Word. Visitors are welcome. Volunteers are needed.
