J. Joel Edwards Public Library Holds Summer Reading Finale
By Guest Columnist Alyssa Williams

ZEBULON - Each summer, the J. Joel Edwards Public Library presents Pike County residents with the opportunity to participate in the annual summer reading program. The activities and events that are organized during this program are created to encourage residents of all ages to pick up a book, or several, over the course of the summer and set time aside to delve into the world of fiction and non-fiction literature.

On Saturday, July 27th, the J. Joel Edwards Public Library hosted a grand finale for the annual children’s summer reading program. The children that enrolled in the summer reading program were invited to participate in this end-of-summer bash to celebrate all of their hard work throughout June and July. At the finale, the children were able to participate in a multitude of crafts and activities that supported the 2019 summer reading program theme, “A Universe of Stories.”

While at one station, participants were able to be decorated with alien and robot tattoos, other stations provided them with the opportunity to create their own alien mask, an “I Need Space” door hanger, and a Create-Your-Own Planet fan. Halfway through the finale program, those who read a total of 25 hours or more over the summer were invited to take place in a drawing for a multitude of awesome door prizes such as a Big Joe beanie-bag chair, giant reading pillows, two free tickets to an upcoming performance put on by the Camelot Theatre, gift cards to a variety of stores and restaurants in Pike County, and much more! After the crafts and prize drawings, the children were invited outside to cool down with a full-blown foam party in the parking lot featuring water guns and endless, tasty watermelon.

Those that are interested in participating in next year’s summer reading program or other programs and services offered by the J. Joel Edwards Public Library can receive more information by calling the library at (770) 567-2014.
