Summer Reading and LOTS of Fun at the J. Joel Edwards Library

ZEBULON - Kicking off the summer reading program at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library this year was Fiddlin’ Dan the Mountain Man (a.k.a. Reuben Haller). Fiddlin’ Dan sang and played his fiddle and mandolin. He talked to the audience about the different kinds of heroes and about the importance of being a hero.

Fiddlin’ Dan performed a super song he wrote himself, called “Super,” about wanting to be a hero. The children accompanied him by shouting the chorus, “Smash! Bang! Boom! Pow!” while providing the hand motions.

While Fiddlin’ Dan recounted the Native American folklore of “The Great Ball Game,” from the book by Joseph Bruchac, the children acted out the story, wearing costumes representing the birds and the animals. Who is the greatest, birds or animals? And which group does the bat belong to? The ballgame determines the winner and explains why the birds fly south for the winter. The library began registration for the summer reading program on Saturday, May 30. “In less than a week we have registered almost half of our total number from last year,” reports library manager Rosemary Bunn. “We are looking forward to record breaking totals again this year.”

The library provides weekly programs for all ages. Teen programs (ages 13+) are held every Monday at 1:00, preschool story time (ages 3-5) on Tuesdays at 11:00, and programs for school age children (6-12) every Thursday at 1:00. “Adults are not to be ignored this year, either,” says Bunn. “Each time adults check out library materials, they may register to win a bag of prizes.” Drawings are held at the end of each week.

The library also offers special programs for adults on select Thursday evenings at 6:00. Last week the library featured the mellow sounds of John Riley and his harp guitars. Also in June, Helen Carter will present “Gluten Free: Is It for Me?” on the 18th, and Albert Marshall will talk about “Identity Theft and Web Safety” on the 25th.

For more information on library offerings this summer, visit the library during regular business hours: MWF 10-5, TTh 10-7, and Saturdays 10-3.

Please note: The library is also looking for volunteers to help out. If you have some time each week and would like to volunteer, please ask about it and tell them that you read about this need on Pike County Times!
