“Big Hero Magic Show” at the J. Joel Edwards Library

ZEBULON - On Thursday, June 18, the children of Pike County were treated to the “Big Hero Magic Show” with local magician David Floyd.

To begin, Floyd shared with the children specific rhyming responses to simple requests such as “hands in lap” followed by “ginger snap” (snapping the fingers and placing them in their laps), or “lip zip” followed by the children sliding an imaginary zipper across their lips while responding “cooooool whip.” When choosing volunteers from the audience, Floyd chose not from raised arms and shouting but from the biggest smiles of those who sat ginger snapped and cool whipped.

Floyd was accompanied in his presentation by his turtle puppet Sheldon, whose super power was speed reading. Sheldon explained that he used to be slow until he was bitten by a radioactive librarian. Now he can read a “hole” book in only five seconds; although, he can’t be expected to remember any of it. For one segment of the show Floyd donned his chicken outfit and became Super Chicken. He was assisted in his quest to find the super egg by audience volunteer Marvin Harrison (7), who, in matching outfit, became Chicken Nugget.

Elizabeth Anderson (9), wearing the necessary protective helmet, assisted Floyd with a Ninja Turtle pizza delivery. Although she held the pizza box tightly closed, somehow a pizza magically transferred from Floyd’s pizza box on the other side of the room.

Aiden Souza (8) posed as Captain America and Katie Ward (7) as Wonder Woman. The two superheroes placed three solid-colored handkerchiefs of red, white, blue into a bag, where they became one American flag.

Volunteers Alanna Wood (9), Maya Gales (7), Ella Roberts (5), John Gilby (9), and Christopher Gilby (6) joined Floyd in a card trick that honored local heroes: first responders, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines.

In conclusion, Floyd reminded the group of the meaning of the word heroes using this acronym: H is for helper, E for effort, R for responsibility, and O for obedience. “If you want to be a true hero,” he told his young audience, “you will try to encompass all of these qualities.”
