J. Joel Edwards Library Offers Reading Materials for the Visually Impaired

ZEBULON - Are you a child or adult who can't read materials printed by conventional methods?  If so, you may qualify for a free national library program that offers books and magazines in audio format and in Braille.

On Saturday, April 9, the J. Joel Edwards Public Library will present a demonstration of the various assistive technologies offered free of charge to eligible Georgia residents.

“We have many patrons who check out audio books for elderly parents who can no longer read even large print but don’t want to give up the joy of reading,” says library manager Rosemary Bunn, “but so much more is available to them through GLASS. Georgia residents with visual impairments, including those who are homebound, can now have talking books delivered directly to their homes.”

GLASS (Georgia Libraries for Accessible Statewide Services) provides these materials free to eligible Georgia residents. All reading material and playback equipment is sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail.

At the library this Saturday, not only will patrons be able to try out the talking book machine, they will also have the opportunity to demo a low-vision keyboard, a magnifier that attaches to a computer and monitor, a text-to-voice reader, and a portable digital magnifying glass.

“We encourage those with visual impairment needs as well as friends, families, and caregivers to attend this hands-on program,” adds Bunn.

The class begins at 1:00 and is free and open to the public. For more information on this program, call the library during regular business hours at 770-567-2014. For more information on GLASS services and eligibility, visit their website at georgialibraries.org/glass/about-glass.
