J. Joel Edwards Public Library Receives Another Interior Upgrade

ZEBULON - The J. Joel Edwards Public Library recently received yet another interior upgrade. The weekend of September 12-13 library employees and volunteers cleared all of the books and periodicals from the shelves in the entire north end of the building. Over a period of two days employees of StorMor deconstructed the shelving and then reconstructed it into a different layout.

“The new layout allows us to better utilize the wall space,” explains library manager Rosemary Bunn. “We were also able to create sunny seating areas near the windows, what I like to call our Windows 2015 Update.”

In February of 2014 the library received a landscaping grant from the Nelson Foundation. The front and north end of the building and all of the islands are now filled with a variety of flowering plants, including gardenias, daylilies, limelight hydrangea, encore azaleas, apricot and coral roses, and purple pixie loropetalum. Patrons may now grab a newspaper or magazine and relax by the tinted windows to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The window seating is also a great place for playing chess, checkers, or one of the other board games available at the front desk.

Library assistant Emily Evans says she is most excited about the new young adult area. “The teen books are no longer down a dark passageway,” she says. “The teens now have an open, inviting area where they can read, study, and access the WiFi. We’re hoping it will encourage teens to visit the library more often.”

The computers in the adult area were recently moved from the wall to and island, where a total of ten computers can be accommodated. “We have only four computers in the island at the present time,” says Bunn, “but thanks to the Sheriff’s Department (who donated eight computers that they were discarding when they switched to laptops), we will soon have the entire island filled with ten working computers.”

Bunn hints that the next round of improvements will probably focus on more updated seating to better accommodate the 21st century library patron. The library invites the public to visit the ever-improving facility and take advantage of the wealth of possibilities that the public library has to offer.
