Senate Passes Resolution Urging Congress to Repeal the Johnson Amendment

ATLANTA - The Senate adopted Senate Resolution 752, sponsored by Sen. Marty Harbin (R – Tyrone), on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. SR 752 urges Congress to repeal the Johnson Amendment and allow churches to participate in political activism.

“The intent of this resolution is nothing but giving churches access to their constitutional First Amendment right,” said Sen. Harbin. “People and organizations are given the right to voice their beliefs and this right should be no different for churches. I am glad that this resolution passed in the Senate and I hope that it encourages Congress to practice what they preach by allowing all organizations to speak out on their beliefs.”

The Johnson Amendment prohibits non-profit organizations from participating in political activism. Senate Resolution 752 urges Congress to repeal this amendment to protect churches’ rights to freedom of speech and participate in political activity.
