The Skirted Maestro - Not Skirting the Music
By Guest Columnist Lee Whitley

GRIFFIN - A precedent is broken, as Captain Renault said in the film Casablanca, when Steve Mulder, artistic director of Griffin Choral Arts, without his usual elegant formal wear, conducts the choir's Celtic Blessings concert on Thursday, May 7, in a skirt. To temper a stampede for tickets, it must be said that the skirt is really a kilt, worn by Dr. Mulder, with all its accompanying embellishments, as well as by the ushers for this concert. The kilt is associated with Celtic tradition, which undergirds Griffin Choral Arts' final season concert at 7:30pm at Griffin First Baptist Church.

“Danny Boy,” “Loch Lomond,” and other Irish favorites are sung by the 50-voice choir with fiddler Jamie Laval, one of the premier Celtic performers on the international scene today, and harpist Kristi Abram Pass.

Tickets are $15 general admission (all ages) at the door or in advance in Griffin at Artistic Flowers and Gifts, Safehouse Coffee Roasters, and First Methodist Church; in Barnesville at Goggans Florist; and in Zebulon at A Novel Experience bookstore.
