Griffin Making Changes to Downtown Roadway

GRIFFIN - As part of the Griffin Town Center Livable Centers Initiative, road construction crews will build a concrete island on Georgia 155/Hill Street at Poplar Street in Downtown Griffin on Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and 21, and also Tuesday, May 26, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. The workers will not be active through the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

To accommodate the crews and their equipment, a lane shift will be installed at the intersection, moving traffic to the right-hand side of the roadway. Signage will be posted in advance of the shift, alerting motorists to the work zone. The team will tackle the northbound side first, and when that side is complete they'll move to the southbound side, shifting traffic in the same way.

Drivers may wish to avoid the area while the crews and their equipment are in the work zones, and straight-through drivers may contact #511Georgia for assistance with an alternate route. Those who proceed through the work zone are urged to slow their speeds and drive with extra caution.

This traffic pattern change is only one part of the overall initiative, and future additional impacts to the area's traffic flow, including any necessary lane closures, will be announced as they are planned. The entire project is expected to be complete by fall, 2020.

The Griffin Town Center Livable Centers Initiative was developed to improve and promote pedestrian and bicycle access throughout the downtown area, to improve overall mobility, and increase parking opportunities. It is a Georgia DOT Local Administered Project for the City of Griffin, in which the City of Griffin maintains responsibility for the actual planning and construction, while the Georgia DOT facilitates the administration of federal funds.

When: Wednesday and Thursday, May 20 and 21, and Tuesday, May 26, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day

Where: Georgia 155/Hill Street at Poplar Street in Downtown Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia

Advisory: Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app. Our maintenance team members who repair roads and bridges and our project teams who oversee construction projects are continuing their essential work, while following sanitary work practices prescribed by health agencies to protect themselves and the public from the coronavirus, as are most state DOTs in the U.S.
