Rep. Burnough to Recognize Georgia’s Gold Star Fathers at State Capitol

ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) will host Gold Star Father Day on Friday, November 9, 2018, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. Rep. Burnough sponsored House Resolution 655 during the 2018 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly recognizing November 9 as Gold Star Father Day annually in Georgia.

“Last year’s first Gold Star Father recognition event gave fathers who lost a child in service to our country a space to share their stories and speak about coping with loss,” said Rep. Burnough. “It is my hope that this year’s program will not only continue to provide comfort for these fathers, but that it will also help these fathers and families to establish a support system.”

This event will honor fathers of members of the United States Armed Forces who were killed in combat or as result of combat. The event will also provide an opportunity for Georgia’s Gold Star Fathers to connect and build a support network. Over 40 fathers representing 30 Georgia cities and counties from all branches of the military were honored during the 2017 Gold Star Father Day.

“I want to thank the state of Georgia for recognizing our Gold Star Families, and in particular, our Gold Star Fathers,” said Navy Region Southeast Gold Star Coordinator Rufus Bundrige. “By highlighting their sacrifice and resiliency, as well as their role in keeping families together, we provide the opportunity to share our deepest respect and gratitude for these men. On behalf of Navy Region Southeast, thank you to the state representatives and all of our local supporters, but most of all, thank you to our Gold Star Fathers.”

Rep. Burnough is going to approach the Georgia State Senate about passing this resolution. For more information on HR 655, please click here.
