Fire Claims Life of Meansville Man

MEANSVILLE - Emergency units responded to a call about a fire at 691 Adams Road last night shortly before 10 p.m. Pike County Emergency Services (PCES) arrived on the scene less than 10 minutes after the call went out and began fighting a fire that was approximately 25% involved at the time including fire going through the roof. They remained on site until the fire was extinguished.

When units arrived, there was a report of a person inside of the house. This prompted a search of the house to find the victim. Fire fighters found Glenn "Scott" Sorrell and brought him out of the house. Sorrell, 51 years of age, died as a result of the fire.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating at this time. However, County Coroner Terrell Moody advised that Sorrell's death was "completely accidental" and that no foul play is expected to found. Moody advised that Sorrell died from smoke inhalation.

Units from Lifsey Springs (Station 3) and Zebulon (Station 7) responded along with tankers from Second District (Station 8), Hollonville (Station 2), Williamson (Station 6), and Lifsey Springs (Station 3). Mid Georgia Ambulance also responded.

PCES Chief Rick O'Barr advised that county personnel remained on site until after 1 a.m. He also advised that they responded to another call at 4 a.m. this morning so members of PCES worked throughout much of the night last night providing fire protection for Pike County's citizens. Chief O'Barr praised members of PCES for their work overnight, "They did an excellent job last night."

ADDED 2.17.15: Today, Pike County Times asked specifically about whether City of Meansville personnel participated in this response. I was advised that two personnel from the City of Meansville did come to the fire scene at some point during the response, and PCES units did fill trucks with water from Meansville during the response. However, the City of Meansville's fire truck did not respond like the rest of the PCES units that responded from all over the county.

[Note from the Editor: I have been covering this story since 2009 and sincerely hope that the county and the City of Meansville can work together to take care of the citizens both within the City limits of Meansville and those who depend on them outside of the city limits as well because it is the right thing to do.
