Annual 2nd Grade Farm Day at Chestnut Oaks Was a Ton of Fun

MEANSVILLE - On Thursday April 17th, we hosted our annual 2nd Grade Farm Day at Chestnut Oaks, and it was a tremendous success! This event gives our second-grade students a hands-on glimpse into the world of agriculture while also tying into their science curriculum.

There were 14 different rotations for the students to enjoy, those included: Farm to Table by Caldwell Beef Farms, Equine, Poultry, Fish Farming by Brooks Fish Farm, Wildlife Identification, Honey Bees by Brutz English Bees, Electrical Engineering, Plant a Seed, Propagation, Wood Working, Large Farm Equipment, Petting Zoo provided by Cattle Creek Ranch, Hay Rides, and Corn Hole!

Originally a kindergarten farm day was organized by the local Farm Bureau, but unfortunately had been on pause for a few years. Thanks to the dedication and leadership of Annikah Self, a junior at Pike County High School and active FFA member, Farm Day was revived last year as part of her SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) project and returned for its second year this spring.

Annikah coordinated a fantastic event and would like to extend her gratitude to:
• FFA Members and peers from the Middle School, NGA, and High School who volunteered as presenters and guides, we had a total of 40 students!
• 4-H Extension Agent Brookelyn Wassel, Farm Bureau and the Women’s Committee for their support
• Mark Camp and the Ag Authority for the use of Chestnut Oaks and continued support
• Terry Ison and Kim & Kappy Pohle for providing hay rides
• Butcher Block for donating lunch
• Ray Brumbloe for providing the farm equipment
• McCrary’s Farm for donating squash plants, which students learned to propagate and take home
• Caldwell Beef Farms, Cattle Creek Ranch, Brutz English Bees, Brooks Fish Farm for their interactive booths
• United Bank for donating the teacher prize for corn hole
• Catherine Hellwig for bringing Fenn the horse for the equine booth
• Tabitha Wainwright and Billy Garrett (Annikah’s parents), Shannon Bartlett (FFA Advisor), and David Quick for their ongoing support of Annikah’s project.

This day wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing collaboration from our community and FFA family. We’re so proud of Annikah and all of our students who made this day memorable for our future agriculturalists!
