PCMS Boys And Girls Cross Country Teams Capture League Titles
By Guest Columnist Todd Child

ZEBULON - The PCMS cross country teams continued its winning ways at the first ever CGMSAL League Championships. The Pirates and Lady Pirates each finish in first place resulting in being crowned league champions.

The girls took to the line first for the two mile course. The girls paced themselves well throughout the race passing runners one by one as the race progressed. Anna Chasteen took the lead after the first mile and never looked back. She crossed the line with a personal best time securing an individual league title.

The other Lady Pirates also performed well with personal best times. Railee Wilson took a podium finish placing third. Lauren Smith also medaled finishing in tenth place while Peyton Bussell shaved 37 second off her best time to finish sixteenth. The big mover for the team was Harley Clay taking a whopping 1:24 off her personal best. Victoria Roark, recovering from an ankle injury, gutted out the race to help the team to victory.

The boys’ team would not be outdone. The Pirates took off when the gun sounded and played out their strategy to perfection reeling in their opponents at a steady pace. Each quarter mile that passed saw the Pike runners continue to move up in the standing.

The fight of the day took place between two of Pike’s own, Brannon Lopez and Garret Child. Lopez took the lead a little over half way through the race with Child having settled in comfortably in the top ten. Child made his move during the last half mile catching Lopez with a quarter mile to go. The two lock in the duel for first place the rest of the way. It came down to a sprint in the last hundred meters with Child edging out Lopez at the tape winning the individual league title by less than one second.

With Child finishing first thirty-five seconds faster than his personal best and Lopez second the stage was set for the rest of team to bring it home to victory. Brandon Scott was next to cross the line for the Pirates missing a medal finish by one place. Scott an incredible 1:17 off his personal best. Three seconds later, Landon Anderson crossed the line with Cooper Hanson not far behind having shaved forty second off his best time. Ethan Odum was the next Pirate runner to cross thirty-five seconds faster than his best. The rest of the team continued to cross the line with personal bests. Brayden Keiser forty-two seconds faster, Noah Strader forty-four seconds better and Tyler Landry crossing the line to help solidify the victory.

The will travel next to Cochran, GA for the Georgia State Championships and Thomasville, GA for the South Georgia / North Florida Championships to finish out the season. This year’s teams have set the standard for next year’s season. Congratulations of a job well done.
