Pecan Trees Removed from the Courthouse Square

ZEBULON - Some long-term residents of the Pike County Courthouse lawn were removed this week. The pecan trees had become a possible hazard to people, vehicles, and the Courthouse itself.

The pecan trees were discussed in the June 30, 2015 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. County Manager John Hanson explained to commissioners that the condition of the trees is steadily declining and that two limbs had already fallen and broken the windshields of two employee vehicles.

Hanson had asked an expert from UGA to look at the trees in order to determine whether there was a problem. It was determined at that time that the trees were a danger to the public and to the courthouse building. Bids were received from three companies to do the work up to a total of $9,450 to be used from contingency for the removal of the eleven trees.

Removal took place this week. Hanson advised today that the trees were very brittle and had many hollow spots in them. The night photo of the fallen tree limb on the Courthouse lawn was actually taken on the night of the Commission meeting in which discussion was held to confirm their removal.
