BREAKING NEWS: Ellis Road Fire Has Been Contained
By Editor Becky Watts

GRIFFIN - The Ellis Road fire in Spalding County has been contained. It was mostly burned out overnight in a creek bottom but has been fully contained around the 11 o’clock hour this morning.

According to Jeff Kenerly, Chief Ranger Sr./District Safety Officer for the Georgia Forestry Commission/Clayton-Lamar-Pike-Spalding-Upson, the fire burned about 114 acres before it was contained. Updated from 150 to 114 acres per Kenerly.

The fire began around noon yesterday as someone was attempting to bale hay and involved fire department personnel as well as two Forestry tractors and an airplane before it was contained. At one point, three or four structures were within sight of the fire, but the fire ended up burning in a different direction so no structures were harmed by this fire.

The Georgia Forestry Commission has discontinued the issuance of any outdoor burning permits and is asking that all outdoor burning be set to the side until the drought conditions are changed. There is a ban on fireworks throughout most of the state, and citizens are urged to use great caution with anything that could cause a wildfire such as stove ashes, cigarettes thrown out of cars, etc. because of the great risk for fire in our area.
