BREAKING NEWS: Grass and Woods Fire on the Pike-Meriwether Line Has Been Contained

ZEBULON - A large grass and woods fire on the Highway 18 at the Pike-Meriwether County lines has been contained. Volunteers from the Pike County Fire Department as well as the Georgia Forestry Commission were on the scene for more than an hour this afternoon. The cause of this blaze is undetermined. Photos are courtesy of the Pike County Fire Department.

Update 8 p.m. Forestry advised that this fire was started by stove ashes and that by the time the fire was contained, 8 acres had burned.

With fire conditions as bad as they are right now, please use common sense with anything that could start a fire. That goes for a little campfire at your home to the use of fireworks (there is a ban on this in many counties including ours!) to tossing out a cigarette as you drive and dumping out your stove ashes before they are completely cooled.

As of yesterday, the Fire Situation for our state is as follows: As of yesterday, there were 54 new fires comprising of 282 acres. There are 16 active state fires comprising 8,172 acres, and 4,314 fires since January 1, 2016 comprising 20,439 acres. (This number does not include fires on public acreage.)
