Bookmark Winners Are Announced - Libraries Equal Strong Communities

ZEBULON - The J. Joel Edwards Public Library is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 bookmark contest. In honor of National Library Week, April 7-13, children in grades K-8 illustrated the theme, “Libraries=Strong Communities.” First, second, and third place winners were chosen from grade categories K-2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8.

Entries were judged by local artist Peter Potter, artist Bambi Rogers of the Lamar County Arts Council, and library board member Anthony Vinson. Each first-place winner received a blue ribbon and a book, and their winning entry was made into a bookmark, which was distributed at the front desk of the library during National Library Week. The first-place winners were Annie Brock (8), Carissa Weintraub (10), and Jasmine Smitko (12).

Second and third place winners received red and white ribbons, respectively. Second place winners were Anna-Marie Davis (8) Brooklyn Bostwick (11), and Lana Kennedy (11).

Third place awards went to Ariana Owens (7), Mary Beth Polk (9), and Rose Kennedy (13).

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. Although the office week is officially over, author Neil Gaiman suggests, “It’s still National Library Week. You should be especially nice to a librarian today, or tomorrow. Sometime this week, anyway. Probably, the librarians would like tea. Or chocolates. Or a reliable source of funding.”
