Pike County Weekend Backpack Food Program
By Guest Columnist Cheryl Bray

ZEBULON - When God calls, the citizens of Pike County Georgia answer. Many volunteers come together to fill food bags for students, who have food insecurity. Presently, in our area there are 112 students, who will receive these food bags. Contained in each bag are 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, and 2 snacks for the weekend.

This is not a new ministry for Pike County, as it is currently entering its 6th year of operation. The average cost for a typical school year is approximately $15,000.00. If you want to sponsor a student for the school year, the cost is $30.00 per month. Any amount is warmly welcomed. Please make checks payable to: First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 312, Zebulon, Ga 30295. Be sure to enclose a notation in the memo section “BACK PACK”. Lastly you can download the ZFBC app and donate through the “Giving” menu. You do not need to be a member of the church to download the app to start the process of giving.

First Baptist Church of Zebulon collects food donations but if any church or other groups want to collect food at their location, we will arrange to pick it up. You can donate food items at the back of Zebulon First Baptist Church. There’s a labelled bin under the covered drive-through area. It is checked daily to retrieve food donations. Items needed are individual microwaveable items such as: mac-n-cheese bowls, ravioli, spaghetti-o’s, individual packages of grits (any flavor or brand) oatmeal and chicken or beef ramen noodles. Other items that are needed are peanut butter crackers, any brand or flavor of pop tarts or individual cereal boxes, fruit cups or apple sauce cups, and trail mix.

There are ways for everyone to help in this ministry. 1. Is to pray for our students. Through prayer all things are possible and our students are our future. 2. Donate either monetarily or food items to help feed these students. 3. Volunteer your time either to help set up on Monday 6pm at Zebulon United Methodist Church or to fill the bags on Tuesday at 1pm at Zebulon United Methodist Church. 4. Next opportunity to volunteer will be Monday, November 27 @ 6pm or Tuesday, November 28 @ 1pm.

For more information regarding scheduling for set up and packing of food items please contact Donna Smith (404) 216-4568 or Susan Trawick (404) 626-0217.

Good news always travels fast and this is true of the Back Pack Food Program. Recently this ministry has qualified and was approved for assistance from the Middle Georgia Food Bank in Macon. They will provide food items for minimal to no cost to the program. This is exciting news! As this ministry expands the need for more volunteers will increase.
