Infant ditched behind local motel while mom passes fraudulent checks

GRIFFIN - On 02/22/19, the Uniformed Patrol Officers with the Griffin Police Department responded to a call from Sky Check Cashing located at 701 W. Taylor Street. The suspect, Omisha Sands (DOB-08/25/97), fled from Sky Check Cashing, as she was pursued by an employee. Sands was apprehended at Hill’s Tire located on W. Taylor Street. One of Sands’ accomplices, Tionna Pugh (DOB-08/01/00), attempted to cash a fraudulent check at Sky Check Cashing also. Pugh was arrested shortly after the incident.

As she was being taken into custody, Sands stated that her 7 month old infant was taken from the scene. Sands claimed to Griffin Police that she had left her 7 month old infant in a vehicle with two of her male accomplices. The two male accomplices sped off with her infant when she fled from Sky Check Cashing. Sands and Pugh claimed they did not know the identity of the two male accomplices.

The 7 month old infant was discovered by the motel clerk at the Comfort Inn and Suites. An anonymous caller contacted the motel and stated that a infant was left behind the motel. Motel staff located the 7 month old infant left behind the motel in a car seat in the rain. EMS was contacted to check the infant for any injuries and health concerns. The baby was cleared by EMS and turned over to DFACS custody.

Omisha Sands is charged with Forgery 2nd Degree, Cruelty to Children, and Reckless Conduct. Tionna Pugh is charged with Forgery 2nd Degree. Both perpetrators were transported to Spalding County Jail on their charges.

The Griffin Police Department would like to thank the citizens of Griffin for their continued involvement and partnership with us in an effort to keep our city safe. The Griffin Police Department works to continue strengthening the bond with the community.
