Maker Space Re-Opens at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library
By Guest Columnist Alla Drake

ZEBULON - The J. Joel Edwards Public Library proudly announces the re-opening of the STEAMroom (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) for regular hours. In this maker space, the first of such in the Flint River Regional Library System, patrons can use die cut machines -- Ellison, Silhouette, and Gemini -- to create designs out of cardstock, vinyl, leather, foil, and other mediums. The 25-inch laminator can be utilized to laminate items large and small, from tiny bookmarks to big posters.

Patrons can also make their own button pins with the button maker, print logos and slogans on clothing and bags with the help of the heat-press machine, and even create 3-dimensional projects on 3-D printer. These machines are provided to the public at no cost. Patrons may provide their own materials or purchase construction paper and cardstock by the sheet.

Cami Hoopes, STEAMroom supervisor, invites teens and adults alike to use their creativity and designing potential. “We are excited to offer this range of creative possibilities to Pike County residents,” she said. “Parents with younger children, homeschool groups, and civic organizations will also find this room a wonderland of ideas.”

The STEAMroom is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, or at other times by reservation. For more information, call J. Joel Edwards Public Library at 770-567-2014.
