BREAKING NEWS: Rabid Bat Identified In Concord Incident
By Editor Becky Watts

CONCORD - Tanya Perkins, Director/Animal Control Officer for Pike County, was advised today by Ben Trotter, Environmental Health County Manager for Pike and Upson Counties from the Georgia Department of Public Health, that a bat sent for rabies testing yesterday came back positive. This bat possibly came in contact with a vaccinated dog. The dog did receive a booster and will be observed for 45 days. This happened in the 1300 block on Flat Shoals Road.

Rabies can occur in skunks, raccoons, coyotes, foxes and bats according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s website. Wild animals with rabies sometimes infect dogs, cats, and livestock. State law requires the vaccination of dogs, cats, and ferrets against rabies on a yearly basis.

If you notice any animals acting strangely or aggressively, do not approach them and call 911. If an animal suspected of rabies is killed, the head is must be preserved so it can be sent off for testing. For more information about rabies, click here.
