BREAKING NEWS: Pike County Has First Confirmed COVID-19 Case

ZEBULON - From Pike Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Jimmy Totten: "This email is to inform you of Pike County’s first positive case of Covid 19. We knew this day would happen, and we know we will have more citizens test positive for covid 19. My recommendations at this time, are that we continue following what the governor has laid out in his emergency declaration, we continue to make sure our citizens and organizations comply with this and that we continue to educate our citizens on how to stay safe during this time based on what the CDC and Public Health have instructed. As I hear more I will continue to keep you informed. As always if you need anything or have any questions, feel free to give me a call. Stay safe out there. Jimmy"

Here is a rundown of the current stats. As of 12 noon today, there are 2,366 confirmed, positive COVID-19 cases here in the state of Georgia. 617 victims have been hospitalized. 69 have died.

Numbers from Pike and the surrounding counties are as follows:
Pike - 1 confirmed case
Lamar - 2 confirmed cases
Monroe -3 confirmed cases
Meriwether - 3 confirmed cases
Upson - 4 confirmed cases
Spalding - 11 confirmed cases
Coweta - 19 confirmed cases and 2 deaths
Fayette - 25 confirmed cases and 2 deaths
There are also 230 cases of unknown county of origin along with 2 deaths.

The State of Georgia has an online daily status report that is updated twice each day at noon and at 7 p.m. Click here to read these statistics for yourself. [Note from the Editor: I am being advised from many who are on the front lines that everyone is not being tested (because tests have been scarce til now, etc.) so many who are not sick enough to be admitted to a hospital are being told to go home and quarantine for 14 days without having an actual positive, confirmed test to know for sure that COVID-19 is what is causing their terrible coughs. Be smart and stay home if you can. If you cannot, please take adequate precautions to protect yourself and your family as well as those around you.]

COVID-19 is a disease that was first identified in Wuhan, China and has spread throughout the world--including here in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Public Health is encouraging the public to use the following precautions to help prevent the spread of this virus and other infectious diseases:

· Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
· Stay home when you are sick.
· Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
· Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
· ADDED: And don't forget about social distancing which means keeping 6 feet between you and others who might come in contact with you at the grocery store, etc.

For further information on COVID-19, please go to Georgia Department of Public Health or to the Centers for Disease Control.

Pike County Times will continue to monitor this situation and provide information to the public as it is obtained.
