BREAKING NEWS: Chapel Roof Collapses at GBCH Yesterday; No One Was Hurt

ZEBULON - Pike County Fire Department Personnel were on scene at the Children’s Home yesterday afternoon where the chapel roof had collapsed. There were no injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation. The State Fire Marshal will be down to view the site in the next couple of days.

The following is the official statement regarding the Meansville Chapel at the Georgia Baptist Children's Home issued October 29, 2019.

“For many years, Cox Chapel was recognized as a local landmark in the Meansville area and the campus of Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries.

Earlier this year, cracks in the plaster ceiling of the facility began appearing and upon further investigation, structural issues were discovered and the building was immediately closed.

Since February, structural engineers have been working to determine the cause and actions needed to secure the facility for possible future use. Recent findings concluded that severe storm winds most likely caused the structure to weaken and plans were underway to begin repairs.”

Dr. Kenneth Z. Thompson, President/ CEO
Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries, Inc.
