BREAKING NEWS: Attempted Traffic Stop in Zebulon Ends in Arrest in Barnesville

ZEBULON - On Sunday, February 18, 2024, Corporal Lynch attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Ford Fusion traveling west on Hwy 18 for a broken tail light. Once Corporal Lynch initiated his blue lights and sirens, the driver Mondarius Kelly, immediately fled toward Lamar County.

Once in the City of Barnesville, officers from Barnesville Police Department as well as the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, took over the pursuit, the pursuit went through several businesses in the city. The perpetrator eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed on Legacy Park Drive in Lamar County.

While checking the vehicle, a duffle bag was in the back seat of the vehicle. There were several duct tape footballs filled with cell phones and tobacco inside. Further investigation showed Kelly and his brother were enroute to Telfair State Prison to drop the contraband into the guard line of the prison.

The Georgia Department of Corrections has taken over the investigation and has identified suspects involved in this conspiracy to insert contraband into the prison system.

As a convicted felon on felony probation, Kelly has been charged in Zebulon for Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Driving Without a License, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Brake Light Violation.

Charges are pending in Lamar County as well as with the Georgia Department of Corrections for Conspiracy to Commit Crossing the Guard Line.
