Pike County Ghost Out 2009

On March 20, 2009, Mid Georgia Ambulance and Pike County High School joined together for the 2nd Annual presentation of Ghost Out. This is a program that shows the dangers of drinking and driving in life-like way to capture the attention of students and forever engrain upon them a lesson that drinking and driving just isn't worth it. Prom Night was just two days after the presentation so the lesson would have been fresh in their minds as students drove to Atlanta for the big night.

Students had to bring signed permission slips in order to be a part of this program because the event is graphic with a simulated car crash, injuries, and even death that comes with the decision to become a drunk driver.

I am going to let the pictures tell the story of this drunk driving incident. Be aware as you are looking at the pictures that the students are watching this incident unfold in real time and listening to the emergency band over the loudspeaker so they know what is being done as it happens.

It reinforced the fact that emergency vehicles don't arrive at the exact time that you call them. It takes time to determine who needs help first and get them evacuated. It also takes time for the coroner to come out to the scene and then have those who have died from their injuries removed from the scene in the Coroner's Van.

At the end of the program, there was a question and answer session where the students who were involved in the Ghost Out were down front in the gymnasium. You could have heard a pin drop when the injured and "dead" students came down the steps between the rows of students who had been asking questions just minutes before. Those participants then joined the rest of the over twenty students who had participated in this Ghost Out.

The dangers of texting and not wearing your seat belt were discussed during this question and answer session too. Getting students to think about their actions and how it affects those around them is a big lesson that was brought home loud and clear during Ghost Out 2009.

Mid GA Ambulance, our volunteer firefighters, our Sheriff's Office, LifeNet, our Coroner's Office and the students who participated in this event did a fantastic job of showing the results of drinking and driving. Mid GA did a great job of coordinating with all of the agencies involved. Everyone volunteered their services. If it makes just one student take the keys from a friend or choose not to drink and drive, it was well worth the effort that was put forth today.

Special thanks go out from Mid GA Ambulance to D & R 4 Wheel Drive, Dunn Wrecker Service, Moody's Funeral Home, Petro South, and all the agencies involved to make this happen. Mid GA would also like to also extend our thanks to Pike County School system for giving us the time with the students and allowing us to do this event for them. Thanks to Wings and Things for the refreshments after the Ghost Out. Please send your comments and suggestions about Ghost Out 2009 to: EMTjbj@aol.com.
