Gordon College Southern Culture Series Continues
With “Evening of Song and Celebration”
Debi Hamlin plans to “mix it up a bit” with her performance in the Gordon College Southern Culture Series.
Hamlin, a recording artist from Macon who also serves as an adjunct professor of history at Gordon, will present an “Evening of Song and Celebration” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
“I am going to perform a mixture of original music, jazz, gospel, some standards and some blues,” she said. “I will also ask for some audience participation in some of the songs I will perform.”
Among her repertoire is the T-bone Walker song, “Stormy Monday,” a perennial blues favorite.
Hamlin started in the music business in her late teens performing with her late father’s band, The Lewis Hamlin, Jr. Orchestra, as well as in churches.
She continued her music career in Macon and later in New York eventually signing with PMP Records. With the death of her father in 1991, Hamlin left the music scene and returned to school eventually earning a Ph.D. in American History from Duke University in 2004.
Hamlin now performs most Sunday morning in local churches where she sings and occasionally plays her flute.
“I want to celebrate certain music creations known by their classic melodies, meaningful lyrics and memorable arrangements,” she said of her upcoming performance.
The five-part Southern Culture Series continues in February with “Education of a Harvard Guy,” a video presentation of a one-man play presented by John Perdew. The play recounts Perdew’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.
Perdew’s presentation is Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.
In March, Mark Brinkman, a Gordon College biology professor, will present Fire Ants: Facts and Fun. Brinkman’s presentation is Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium.
All presentations are free and open to the public.
Gordon College, in Barnesville, is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia and offers more than 80 programs of study to more than 3,800 students.

Regional Public Transportation Is Available
The regional public transportation program provides public tranportation for residents of Butts, Lamar, Pike, Spalding, and Upson Counties and has operated in this region since 1999. The regional public transportation program is administered by the McIntosh Trail Regional Development Center, and is one of two suburban regional public transportation systems approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The regional public transportation plan operates under a "demand response" model which means that there are no fixed routes, bus stops, or pick up times. With a deman response model, residents call in and order a trip 24 hours in advance, and daily routes are generated based on the destinations requested. The transportation operator will attempt to accommodate all callers for the times they request. During peak times (8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) the system may be at or near full capacity. Trips during off peak times (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) are no longer being offered.
In order to schedule a trip on the public transportation system, please call 770-229-4885 or in Upson County call 1-800-906-3257. The fee is $2.00 per one way trip, and the service is offered Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
